Germaine Greer appears on a Shakespeare-themed episode of the ABC’s Q&A program and responds to an audience member who asks about the relevance of the playwright’s work to modern Australia’s debates about Islam and asylum seekers. ‘Othello is a victim of, if you like, imperialism,’ Greer says. ‘He’s been sucked into somebody else’s scenario and he’s enacted this fake role to survive.’ She says Shakespeare also writes about imperialism in The Tempest. ‘You have the struggle of Caliban versus the instruments of the imperial power … It’s all there if you want to look for it’
