Never mind the Tory leadership election, Labour party implosion, Brexit upset… Ladies and gentlemen, Sheridan Smith is back on stage in Funny Girl!
After a saga the likes of which theatreland hasn’t seen in years, one of the country’s most loved – but also seemingly most troubled – actresses is finally (and suddenly) treading the boards at the Savoy after a two-month absence.
Smith, 35, is again giving her performance as the American vaudevillian Fanny Brice, which won her a ton of accolades when the show opened last December, and should have been a relative walk in the park when Michael Mayer’s production transferred into town but instead saw her come unstuck in early May.
