For many he is the greatest playwright of all time, a man whose timeless works have enriched the English language and produced hundreds of immortal phrases.

But even Shakespeare's biggest fans may struggle to tell you how many of his plays feature eye-gouging, or which one produced the expression "What the dickens?"
