Plácido Domingo’s Operalia, The World Opera Competition, Crowns Opera’s Newest Superstar in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
WHAT: This Sunday, 7/24, Jalisco will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Teatro Degollado with Operalia 2016, an international singing competition founded by world-famous opera star and conductor Plácido Domingo.
The competition, which brings together 40 participants from 16 countries and includes eight American performers, will crown a winner as the next greatest star in the world of opera in a region with a rich Opera and performing arts community. The theater even hosts “Music and Opera Tuesdays” for local citizens, and is the ideal location to announce the next leader of the industry.
Operalia was launched 23 years ago and has been traveling the world to various host cities annually since, attracting world leaders in opera, theater and music to stand as judges. This year’s jurists include Peter Katona, Casting Director of the Royal Opera House in London, and Joan Matabosch, Artistic Director of the Teatro Real in Madrid.
Plácido Domingo himself, as well as competition jurists, frequently take a committed interest in the career development of the competitors. Singers may be chosen to join one of several Young Artists programs currently established in Washington and Los Angeles in the United States and Valencia in Spain and others are frequently hired for performances around the world through the connections made at the competition.
