Jeffrey R. 'Harry' Holcombe

MANASQUAN Jeffrey R. "Harry" Holcombe, longtime speech and drama teacher at Peddie School, Hightstown, NJ, died from cancer at his home in Manasquan, NJ, on Feb. 7, 2015. He was 69 years old. Jeffrey was born Aug. 17, 1945, in Princeton, NJ, son of the late Virginia and Robert Holcombe of Hopewell, NJ. He attended Princeton High School, Trenton Junior College and Pasadena Playhouse in California. He was hired in July of 1968 to teach speech and drama at The Peddie School, where he started in the Fall of that year. He finally retired from teaching after 45 years in June of 2013. During those years, he was influential in developing the drama program at Peddie. Through the years he had an impact on many young minds and a number of his students have kept in touch with him since they graduated from Peddie. While he lived most of the year on the Peddie campus, in later years, he spent his summers in Manasquan, NJ, in the house he shared with Francis A. Towne. He loved the Manasquan sun and surf. Since childhood, Jeffrey had a passion for movies and theater. That is why he went into the field of directing. He also was an avid collector of all things brass and copper including pad locks, pots, chains, belt buckles and even door hinges! He is survived by his longtime companion and recent spouse, Francis A. Towne; his two sisters, Gretchen Page of Hamilton, NJ, and Deborah Holcombe of Yonkers, NY; nieces, Cynthia Holcombe, Melody Saccone, and nephew, Joshua Page. The viewing and funeral will be held at Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, 2560 Pennington Road in Pennington, NJ. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, and the funeral will at the same location the next day, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. There will an addition view hour from 10 to 11 a.m. that morning before the service. There will be a reception to honor Jeff's memory following the interment at Peddie School Dining Hall.
