(from Frank Gagliano.)

Emily Morse, new Artistic Director of the New Dramatists, hosted a ND Alumni potluck luncheon and brainstorming session last Saturday in the New York City New Dramatists headquarters on West 44th Street. The meeting was fabulous, inspiring, moving, rewarding, collegiate, filled with love — and future plans. The ND is the world’s oldest organization for emerging playwrights that dates back to the 1940s, still turning out professional playwrights, among them, Pulitzer and Tony winners. The alumni playwrights attending last Saturday’s meeting represented groups going back to my period, the 1960s (and the rise of Off Broadway), and time-lining America’s political journey from the Kennedy/King assassinations and Viet Nam, through the Obama years (and the Corporate NY Theatre of today). The reminiscences of each alum were enlightening, often funny and finally moving. As a ND alum, I’m entitled to one reading a year, supported by the most hard-working, talented interns around. I’ll be making use of that slot in the Spring. The plans for utilizing and expanding the ND alumni talent are exciting, indeed. Congrats, Emily. Stay tuned. FG
