(Douglas Martin’s article appeared in The New York Times, 7/4.)

Jack Richardson, a playwright who burst onto the New York theatrical scene in the early 1960s and then almost as quickly vanished from it, died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 78.

His wife, the film editor Susan E. Morse, said that he had had many health problems in recent decades, including heart attacks and cancer, but that there was no specific cause of death.
