TENDER BUTTONS was presented in progress at Medicine Show Theatre, NYC, 3/20 – 3/21/11, as part of Lovesphere, the 67-year performance project currently in its 16th year. Special guests were poets Kate Colby and Robert Fitterman.
TENDER BUTTONS weds the seminal modernist text of the same name by Gertrude Stein with the avant-alt-art rock score it was always meant to have. TENDER BUTTONS celebrates the tender and playful eroticism of the place we call home.
The Immortal CASSANDRA VICTORIA CHOPOURIAN sings in her debut as Alice B. The TENDER BAND, which is collectively composing the music, is comprised of bassist Gary Heidt, cofounder of Mammals of Zod (“masterpiece of post-Beefheart jamming and ambient psychedelia” Village Voice, “Deeply moving”- Signal to Noise), genERAlhoSPItal (“Emmet Otter’s Jug Band to the Riverbottom Gang of the Music Industry”– The Aquarian), Fist of Kindness, co-author of the Defenestration Trilogy (“Engrossing” Leighton Kerner in Opera News); drummer Matt Metzgar (Tombstone, Hooverville, Fist of Kindness); guitarist/Paris Review-published poet Jared Hayley, of the “noise of tempered post-punk” Water Margin (Allmusic.com) and the absurdist-ecstatic collective The Badgers; FIREHORSE the DJ (idubnewyork, tHe LaTtEr, evolverov) on turntables, keyboard and electronics; and STEVE DWORKIN (Sine Qua Non, La Fente de Noir) on cello and accordion.
