TOM STOPPARD, arriving in New York from London only a few hours earlier, had not yet seen a run-through of his play “Arcadia,” which is scheduled to open on Broadway Thursday at the Barrymore Theater. But he already had some tinkering in mind.
“I’d like to take three minutes out of the first act,” he said, sitting outside his SoHo hotel with a cappuccino and a cigarette on an unusually balmy recent evening. “It doesn’t look like much — it’s just a hundred beats — but it makes a difference.”
