Now that final version has been dusted down. An evening for Williams’ aficionados only? An endurance test? Not a bit of it. Gene David Kirk’s revelatory revival at Jermyn Street suggests the author wasn’t being over-indulgent: though emphatically a “play”, the piece revealed here has the richness of a poem, at once delicate and unyielding, by turns florid and compressed, a cry from the heart that emerges through complicated echo-chambers of arch invention as a lyrical murmur of anguish.
