Among the tributes honouring Dame Joan Sutherland, the greatest opera singer Australia has produced, there emerges a loving portrait of a down-to-earth, dedicated, self-effacing and good-humoured diva.
When the artist Sidney Nolan presented his set model and designs for a revival of Il Trovatore at the Opera House, his peach-coloured centrepiece of a full moon prompted Sutherland to drily remark: ''It looks like a fried egg to me.''
