Many of the greatest musicals involving serious roles for black performers have been penned by white artists — from George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" and Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" to Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's "Dreamgirls" and Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' masterful "Ragtime."
