Haunted: Theatre Royal, Bath
Edna O’Brien may be 80 this year but her latest play makes most young playwrights look like milquetoasts. The Berrys are living out their twilight years in an anonymous London suburb. Mr Berry (Niall Buggy) is a feckless house-husband who fantasises about his past and what’s left of his future.
His wife, the redoubtable Gladys (Brenda Blethyn), works in a doll factory. Suffering from a kind of marital gangrene they are haunted by their past which includes a miscarriage, his infidelities and loss of sexual vigour.
